Phish is an American rock band formed at the University of Vermont in Burlington in 1983. The group is known for its extended improvisational live performances, complex compositions, and eclectic musical style that draws from progressive rock, jazz, funk, bluegrass, and psychedelic rock. Often compared to the Grateful Dead for their improvisational approach and dedicated fanbase, Phish also inherited Frank Zappa's compositional complexity and sense of humor. The band's classic lineup consists of Trey Anastasio (guitar, vocals), Mike Gordon (bass, vocals), Jon Fishman (drums, vocals), and Page McConnell (keyboards). They built a massive following through relentless touring and legendary live shows before achieving mainstream commercial success.
